The National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped, Kolkata, is an apex institution of the country in the area of disability rehabilitation. NIOH is running different courses for medical and paramedical personnel in the area of Disability and Rehabilitation, one of which is DNB (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation).
Please find attached advertisement for DNB (PMR) training for the session 2007-2009 in our Institute.
It will be of great help to us if this is circulated among postgraduate students of orthopaedics & PMR desires of joining this training.
We are going to arrange a Walk- in Interview for the session 2007-2009 on 14.02.2007 at 3 p.m. at NIOH campus, Kolkata.

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for DNB (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation) training for academic session 2006 at NIOH accredited by NBE, Ministry of Health, New Delhi. NIOH is an apex organization in the area of orthopedic rehabilitation, having well-equipped IPD, OPD, Operation theatres, Departments of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, P&O, Rehab. Nursing &SER & extension services; labs like Urodynamic, Gait, Arthroscopy& excellent library facility. Institute is in process to start Masters Course in PT,OT ,P&O and Advanced Diploma in Rehab. Nursing.
The focus of DNB(PMR) is on clinical training in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation that includes treatment modalities in Physical Medicine, Orthopedic Restorative Surgery, Uro-dynamics, Electro-diagnosis (EMG & NCV), Principles of Therapeutic exercises, Disability Evaluation, Rehabilitation Management, Prosthetics & Orthotics, Psychosocial and Psychiatric Problems, Principles of Team approach, Organization and administration of Rehabilitation Facilities.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE IThe Institute was established to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services to the persons with loco-motor disability, irrespective of age, sex, caste and creed. Rehabilitation needs a team effort, where contribution from a wide variety of professionals is required. Development of composite approach of rehabilitation through a model services and manpower development are taken as its major objectives.
The main objectives of the Institute are:
- Human Resource Development-to develop manpower for providing services to the Orthopaedically Handicapped population, namely training of Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Orthotic & Prosthetic technicians, Employment & Placement Officers and Vocational Counselor etc.
- To provide services in the area of rehabilitation, restorative surgery, aids & appliances and vocational training to the persons with disability.
- Manpower development to serve the orthopaedically handicapped population.
- To conduct and sponsor research in all aspects related to the rehabilitation of the orthopaedically handicapped.
- To standardize aids and appliances and to promote their manufacture & distribution.
- To provide consultancy services to the State Government and voluntary agencies.
- To serve as an apex documentation & information centre in the area of disability & rehabilitation.

The Governing body of NIOH is constituted by two Councils viz (1) General Council (GC) whose President is the Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India and (2) Executive Council (EC) whose Chairperson is the Joint Secretary (Disability Division), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India.
